Here is a list of commonly used abbreviations and acronyms used by RVers. If you know of any others or see any corrections needed, please reply to this post and let me known what they are.

  • 4x2 = Two wheel drive vehicle
  • 4x4 = Four wheel drive vehicle
  • 4WD = Four wheel drive vehicle
  • 5er = Fifth wheel trailer
  • AC = Air conditioning
  • AC = Alternating current: As in 120 volt AC household voltage
  • A/C = Air conditioning
  • AGM = Advanced glass mat: type of battery construction
  • Ah = Amp hour: battery rating
  • Amp(s) = Amperes: Unit of current measurement
  • ATF = Automatic Transmission Fluid
  • BC = Brake controller
  • Black Water = Sewage water normally from toilet
  • BLM = Bureau of Land Management: Mission is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.
  • BTU = British thermo unit: used to rate heating and cooling devices
  • BTW = By the way
  • CAT Scale = scale used to weigh large vehicles, located at many truck stops
  • CCC = Cargo carrying capacity
  • CG = Campground
  • COE = U.S. Army Corp of Engineers: Mission is to provide vital public engineering services in peace and war to strengthen our Nation's security, energize the economy, and reduce risks from disasters.
  • CTD = Cummings turbo diesel engine
  • CW = Camping World: Large RV retailer
  • DC = Direct current: as in 12 volt DC battery voltage
  • DD = Dear daughter
  • DH = Dear husband
  • Dinghy = A vehicle towed behind a motorhome or trailer
  • DIY = Do it yourself
  • Dooley = Duel rear wheels
  • DP = Diesel pusher: rear diesel engine powered motorhome
  • DRW = Duel rear wheels
  • DS = Dear son
  • DS = Dump station
  • DSL = Digital subscriber line: form of internet access via telephone lines
  • Dually = Dual rear wheels
  • DW = Dear wife
  • EPDM = Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer: material that rubber roofs are made of
  • ERS = Emergency road service
  • ESP = Extended service plan
  • FHU = Full hook ups: water/electric/sewer
  • Fiver = Fifth wheel trailer
  • FT = Full time
  • FW = Fifth wheel trailer
  • FWIW = For what it's worth
  • FYI = For your information
  • GPS = Global Positioning Satellite: normally used to describe a navigation device
  • GAWR = Gross axle weight rating: Maximum weight specified load capacity of an axle specified by the manufacturer. Includes both the weight of the axle and the portion of a vehicle's weight carried by the axle, includes passengers and cargo.
  • GCWR = Gross combined weight rating: The vehicle weight plus maximum cargo weight plus trailer weight.
  • GCVW = Gross combined vehicle weight: Actual weight of your truck, trailer, cargo and passengers.
  • Grey Water = Waste water from sinks and shower
  • GVW = Gross vehicle weight: Actual weight of your vehicle including cargo and passengers.
  • GVWR = Gross vehicle weight rating: maximum allowable total mass of a vehicle or trailer when loaded including the weight of the vehicle itself plus fuel, passengers, cargo, and trailer tongue weight.
  • HD = Heavy duty
  • HDT = Heavy duty truck
  • IMHO = In my humble opinion
  • IMO = In my opinion
  • ISP = Internet service provider
  • LMAO = Laughing my ass off
  • LB = Long box
  • LT = Light truck: normally used when discussing tires LT235
  • MH = Motor home
  • NPS = National Park Service
  • OEM = Original equipment manufacturer
  • PSD = Power Stroke Diesel
  • PU = Pop up trailer
  • Pup = Small travel trailer
  • RGV = Rio Grande Valley
  • RV = Recreational vehicle
  • SB = Short Box
  • SKP = Escapee
  • SP = State park
  • SRW = Single rear wheel
  • ST = Special tires: designation for trailer tires as in ST205
  • TC = Truck camper
  • TH = Toy hauler
  • TP = Toilet paper
  • TT = Travel trailer
  • TWR = Tongue weight rating
  • URL = Uniform resource locator: web site address
  • VIN = Vehicle identification number
  • WallyWorld = Wal-Mart
  • WD = Washer and dryer
  • W/D = Washer and dryer
  • W/E = Water and electric
  • Wet Cell = Type of battery construction: used by most common 6 and 12 volt batteries
  • WiFi = Wireless Fidelity: wireless system used for internet access
